Hospital stays can represent a critical time to get paperwork like power of attorney and wills done. Hospitals can often notarize medical power of attorney, but generally no other paperwork. For that, you will need a mobile notary that visits hospitals, like myself.

I provide mobile notary services in Durham, including visits to Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, and other facilities. I travel directly to the patient’s room, coordinating carefully with families so visit is as smooth and unobtrusive as possible. Schedule a visit. Nurses are generally very helpful when trying to locate witnesses.

Hospital notarizations often involve documents that require witnesses. It’s important to know that hospital employees are not allowed to act as witnesses, and as the notary, I am also legally prohibited from serving as a witness. If witnesses are required, they must be independent adults who are present at the time of signing.

If you need help understanding your witness needs, I’m happy to explain this ahead of time via text. Witnesses can not be benefactors of the paperwork being done.

Identification is another common concern in hospital settings. All signers must have a valid, government-issued photo ID in order for a notarization to take place. This can sometimes be challenging for elderly patients or those who were admitted unexpectedly. Most often I run into this in emergency rooms where the patient was brought in without their ID. At other times, older people that no longer drive may have let their ID expire. I can not accept expired IDs. Without proper ID, I cannot proceed with the notarization, even in urgent situations. It’s helpful to confirm ID availability in advance.

For caregivers and family members coordinating care, convenience matters. Appointments can be requested and booked online, making it easier to plan a hospital visit without extra phone calls.

If you need a notary at Duke Hospitals in Durham, I’m available to come directly to the patient’s room and help ensure documents are notarized correctly and compliantly. Often I can be exactly on time, but occasionally there can be a holdup at the parking garage, security or the front desk. I will text if I am running late, it its rarely more than 10 minutes. When you call, please let me know what building you are in. Often, hospitals have multiple buildings. You can ask your nurse what the easiest way is to be clear about where you are.
